Major Enhancements Slated for Othello's Kiwanis Park in Spring 2026

City plans new splash pad, basketball courts, and accessible playground to revitalize community space

Othello's Kiwanis Park is set to undergo significant improvements starting in spring 2026, aiming to transform the park into a more inclusive and engaging community hub.

Mayor Shawn Logan announced that the construction of a new splash pad, initially planned for summer 2025, was postponed due to the need for state agency approvals. "We're going to build it next spring," Logan stated.

The project, funded by a $1.26 million grant, includes the installation of the splash pad and the renovation of walking trails throughout the park. The splash pad will be located on the Shady Lane side, near the park's primary parking lot, and will feature water jets both in the ground and on accessible play structures. A standout feature is the "super soaker," a device that holds approximately 55 gallons of water, periodically releasing it to the delight of visitors. The design incorporates a railroad theme, paying homage to Othello's heritage and complementing the Iron Horse playground that opened in Lions Park in 2024.

In addition to the splash pad, the city secured a $346,500 grant from the Recreation and Conservation Office to construct two new basketball courts, including one designed for individuals with limited mobility. The city will contribute an additional $38,500 to this initiative. The existing basketball court, which lacks lighting, will be removed and replaced with the new, illuminated courts, enhancing safety and extending playtime for residents.

Further plans for Kiwanis Park include the replacement of outdated playground equipment from the 1980s with a larger, universally accessible structure featuring multiple interactive elements. The new playground will be installed with rubber surfacing to improve safety and accessibility. Additionally, the parking lot will be expanded, and disabled parking spaces will be updated to meet current standards. These enhancements aim to serve the community's youth, who make up 33% of Othello's population, many of whom are underserved and disadvantaged.

These developments are part of Othello's broader efforts to enhance community spaces and provide residents with modern, accessible recreational facilities. The city has been proactive in securing funding and planning projects that cater to the diverse needs of its growing population.

Residents can look forward to these exciting additions, which promise to make Kiwanis Park a vibrant and inclusive destination for families and individuals of all ages and abilities.
